Technology Overview
The Flexible Microengine (FME) is X2M’s edge computing technology. It operates at two levels: operating with connected devices for local processing, and in the cloud for abstracting network topology and managing long-range wireless device fleets.
At the device level, FME enables meters, sensors and safety devices to make decisions locally rather than relying on a central server. A gas meter working with the FME can detect seismic activity and shut down the gas supply within seconds. A water meter can identify a leak pattern and flag it immediately.
At the cloud level, FME abstracts network complexity and topology differences from high-level users. For long-range wireless devices communicating over protocols like LoRaWAN or NB-IoT, cloud-level FME handles protocol translation, device abstraction and fleet management so operators see a consistent interface regardless of the underlying network.
FME can operate its intelligence at the edge, in the cloud or anywhere in between. This provides great flexibility for customers and also hides network complexity and topology differences from high-level applications and users.
Processing close to the device means faster responses, lower bandwidth use and continued operation when network connectivity drops. Processing in the cloud means consistent management of diverse device fleets without operators needing to understand each network’s specifics.
