Field Measuring, Controlling and Communication Devices
Hardware
X2M supplies hardware for measurement, communication and control of utility resources, transmitting data to and from the Vision by X2M platform and controlling street lights.
X2M supplies a range of hardware devices for measuring, monitoring and controlling utility resources across water, gas and electricity networks. Every metering or sensor device connects to the Vision by X2M platform which uses X2M’s FME edge computing technology for local processing, autonomous decision-making and two-way communication.
Hardware can connect over various standard communications protocols (3G/4G/5G, NB-IoT, LTE-M, LoRaWAN, Sigfox, WiSUN, ZigBee) and operates reliably in challenging field environments, including underground pits, remote sites and battery-only installations.
Street light lamps and controllers are available that can be integrated with light poles to provide efficient and effective control over a range of street light deployment models include AI-enabled fault detection and alerting.
Data Loggers
X2M’s data loggers are multi-purpose communication devices that enable the collection of metering and sensor data – consumption, pressure, flow, temperature and other measurements – from legacy or devices without transmission capability and transmit it to the Vision by X2M platform for centralised monitoring, analysis and control. Data loggers can receive control commands from Vision by X2M and where available can actuate local controls with the local devices.
Data loggers can operate autonomously on battery power, queue data during connectivity gaps and transmit efficiently when the network is available. They connect over various standard IoT communications protocols and through various device interfaces.
Key capabilities
Multi-sensor data collection
Capture data from multiple sensor types including consumption, pressure, flow and temperature in a single device.
Store-and-forward operation
Battery-operated with message queuing for environments where continuous connectivity isn’t available. Data is stored locally and transmitted when the network connection is restored.
Various device interfaces
Connect to devices through serial interfaces, RS485, Modbus and pulse interfaces.
Protocol-agnostic connectivity
Connect over 3G, 4G, 5G, NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, Sigfox, ZigBee or Ethernet, whatever infrastructure is available in your deployment environment.
Vision platform integration
All data flows into the Vision by X2M platform for centralised monitoring, analytics, alerting, reporting and control alongside other connected devices.

Platform integration
X2M’s data loggers are connected and managed through the Vision IoT platform. All sensor data flows into Vision for centralised monitoring, analytics, alerting, reporting and control alongside other directly connected devices such as water meters, gas meters and energy meters. Where the local device has a controlled element such as a valve or configuration setting, Vision by X2M can send the commands to the device via the data logger to effect desired remote operation of the device.
X2M’s smart water meters connect to the Vision by X2M platform, giving municipal water authorities live consumption data, automated meter reading, leak detection and remote valve control across their entire network. Smart water meters include LoraWAN, NBIoT or Cat M1 communications within the water meter which allows remotes monitoring and control of the meter and elements within it. Various sizes and manufacturers of smart water meters are available.
Key capabilities
Automated meter reading
Replace manual meter visits with remote, automated data collection. Vision reads meters on schedule and surfaces consumption data in near real time.
Leak detection and anomaly alerts
Based on data collected from the smart water meter, the Vision by X2M platform identifies unusual consumption patterns, potential leaks and infrastructure faults. In Gochang City Council’s deployment, leak detection reduced wastage by 19%.
Remote valve control
Open and close valves in the smart meter remotely through the Vision platform, enabling faster response to emergencies and more efficient network management.
Welfare monitoring
Water usage patterns can identify welfare concerns. In Gochang, more than 200 cases were detected through non-use patterns, triggering welfare checks for vulnerable residents.
Underground pit operation
X2M’s meters with integrated communications operate reliably in underground pits where manual readings were previously impractical, using battery power and store-and-forward data transmission. (data is saved locally and sent when a connection becomes available)
Consumption analytics
Analytics for resource planning, demand forecasting and billing accuracy across your entire water network.

Platform integration
X2M’s smart water meters are connected and managed through the Vision by X2M platform. Vision provides the cloud-based data aggregation, device management and analytics layer that makes remote water monitoring possible at scale. Water metering is one of several utility verticals that Vision supports as a single, unified platform.
X2M’s smart gas meters enable the measurement and control of residential and commercial gas delivery. Gas meters connect to the Vision by X2M platform, providing remote monitoring, automated readings, leak detection and emergency response capabilities.
Key capabilities
Remote monitoring and automated readings
Replace manual meter visits with continuous, automated data collection. Vision reads gas meters on schedule and surfaces pressure, consumption and status data in real time.
Leak detection and pressure monitoring
15-minute pressure readings enable rapid identification of leaks, pressure drops and infrastructure faults across the network.
Earthquake and emergency response
Vision-connected gas meters associated with FME edge intelligence can locally initiate building gas shutdowns during earthquakes and tsunamis, without waiting for central system commands.
Remote valve control
Open and close gas valves remotely through the Vision by X2M platform for faster emergency response and more efficient network operations.
LPG logistics optimisation
For bottled gas markets, the meter supplies consumption data to a platform that enables tracking of delivery schedules, consumption rates and replenishment needs, reducing logistics costs by up to 20%.
