What Is Distributed Intelligence?
Most device connection platforms follow a simple pattern: devices collect data, send it to the cloud, the cloud processes it and users are advised with reports or alerts. A few platforms allow commands to be sent back down to devices. This works for reporting and analytics, but it fails when speed matters. A gas leak during an earthquake cannot rely on communications to a data centre for decisions. A water valve that needs to shut off immediately cannot depend on network availability.
Distributed intelligence moves processing closer to the device. Intelligent logic runs at the edge — on the device itself or on local controllers. Faster decisions, lower bandwidth and continued operation when connectivity drops.
X2M’s Approach: FME (Flexible Microengine)
At the core of X2M’s distributed intelligence capability is FME, the Flexible Microengine. FME is edge computing firmware forming part of the Vision by X2M platform and that enables devices to process data, execute logic and take action locally. FME can operate at both the device level and the cloud level, abstracting network topology from higher level users so they can focus on business logic rather than infrastructure structure.
FME provides true two-way communication between the platform and connected devices. Devices receive instructions, evaluate conditions against local rules and initiate actions autonomously. X2M calls this “human-free control”: connected infrastructure responding to changing conditions without waiting for a person to intervene.
This is operational, not theoretical. FME is the technology behind X2M’s platform locally initiating building gas shutdowns during earthquakes and tsunamis. That response must happen quickly and cannot depend on cloud connectivity being available at that moment.
Use Cases
Automated Emergency Response
In seismic zones, gas meters linked with the FME can detect earthquake signals and autonomously shut off gas supply to a building without waiting for a cloud command. Deployed in Taiwan.
Remote Meter Management
Utility operators can remotely configure metering parameters, update firmware and issue control commands (valve open/close, flow adjustments) across distributed networks, reducing truck rolls and speeding up response to operational issues.
Bandwidth-Constrained Environments
In deployments where connectivity is limited or expensive — rural water networks, underground infrastructure, remote industrial sites — FME processes data locally and transmits only relevant summaries or alerts, reducing data costs while maintaining visibility.
Real-Time Infrastructure Control
Water networks and gas infrastructure can be controlled in real time through two-way communications, with local intelligence ensuring safe operation even during network disruptions.
